Bottom line: Card rarity is determined by how many copies were printed and how hard the card is to pull from packs. Base cards are common; numbered cards (/10, /25) and case hits are extremely rare. Rarity directly affects resale value — a Silver Prizm parallel is typically 2–4× base value, while a Gold /10 can be 15–30×.
Common

Base Card

Most common. Standard version found in every pack. No special treatment.

Uncommon

Insert

Non-base card with unique design. Lower pull rate than base, usually 1:4 to 1:12 packs.

Varies

Parallel

Same card as base but with different colour/foil treatment. Pull rates vary by colour. Silver = common; Gold = rare.

Rare

Short Print (SP)

Intentionally printed in smaller quantities than base. Typically 1:2 to 1:6 hobby boxes. Significant premium over base.

Very Rare

Super Short Print (SSP)

Extremely limited — sometimes 1 per case (6–12 boxes). Often features alternate photos or unique designs. Commands strong premiums.

Very Rare

Numbered Card

Serial numbered on the card (e.g., /25, /99, /499). Lower numbers = more valuable. /1 is a one-of-one.

Ultra Rare

Case Hit

The rarest non-numbered card in a product. Typically 1 per case. Often a special design autograph or memorabilia card.

Unique

One of One (1/1)

Only one copy exists. The holy grail of card collecting. Platinum 1/1, Logoman, and printing plates are examples.

How to Identify Rare Cards

STEP 1

Identify the card type

Check if the card is base, insert, or parallel. Base cards have no special designation. Inserts have unique names like "Rookie Revolution" or "Elite Series".

STEP 2

Look for numbering

Flip the card over or examine the front for a serial number (e.g., /25, /99). Numbered cards are always more valuable than their unnumbered base.

STEP 3

Check for SP/SSP markings

Some cards are marked "Short Print" or have alternate photos. Compare with the standard base version to spot differences.

STEP 4

Research print runs

Use manufacturer checklists or Card Source Canada listings to find stated print runs. Fewer copies = higher rarity.

STEP 5

Compare prices

Search sold listings on eBay.ca for the same card in different parallels. Silver Prizm might sell for 2× base; Gold /10 could sell for 20× base.
