When buying raw (ungraded) cards, understanding condition is everything. A card described as 'Near Mint' by one seller might be 'Excellent' by another's standards. Here's a practical guide.
The Standard Scale
Mint (MT) — Near-perfect. Barely any wear. Corners are sharp, surface is clean, centering is excellent (within 60/40).
Near Mint-Mint (NM-MT) — Barely any flaws. Slightly off-centre or one minor corner touch. This is how most well-kept cards look.
Near Mint (NM) — Light wear on corners or edges. Minimal surface issues. Still very presentable.
Excellent-Mint (EX-MT) — Noticeable wear on corners. Slight surface scratches visible under light. Presentable but clearly used.
Excellent (EX) — Heavy corner wear, creases beginning to show. Surface may have scratches.
Very Good (VG) — Significant wear. Multiple corner blunting, creases, surface wear. Collectible but visibly used.
Good (G) / Poor (P) — Heavy damage. Creases, tears, writing. Collectible only for completion purposes.
The Four Things Graders Check
1. Centering — Use a ruler or eyeball the borders. More than 70/30 off-centre significantly drops value. 2. Corners — Use a loupe or magnifier. 'Fuzzy' or rounded corners are wear. 3. Edges — Run your finger along the edge. Nicks and chips are deductions. 4. Surface — Hold the card at a 45° angle under a bright light. Scratches show up clearly.
