Grading is the single most important factor in determining a sports card\'s value. A card worth $50 in raw condition can be worth $500 or more in gem mint. This guide explains the three major grading companies and helps you choose the right one.
Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA)
PSA is the most recognized name in sports card grading. Their 1-10 scale is the industry standard, and their red, white, and blue labels are instantly recognizable at card shows and online marketplaces.
What PSA grades: Centering, corners, edges, and surface. They assign one overall grade rather than subgrades.
PSA 10 (Gem Mint): A virtually perfect card. Centering must be 55/45 or better. No staining, no print lines, four sharp corners.
PSA 9 (Mint): One minor flaw allowed. Often the best value for collectors who want condition without paying the PSA 10 premium.
Pop Report: PSA\'s population report shows how many cards exist at each grade. Lower population PSA 10s command significant premiums.
Beckett Grading Services (BGS)
BGS uses a similar 1-10 scale but provides subgrades for centering, corners, edges, and surface. Their black labels with gold text are highly coveted, especially BGS 9.5 Gem Mint and the rare BGS 10 Black Label.
Subgrades matter: A BGS 9.5 with all 10 subgrades is more valuable than a BGS 9.5 with 9 subgrades. Collectors love the transparency.
BGS 10 (Pristine): Stricter than PSA 10. A true BGS 10 is essentially flawless and commands massive premiums.
Sportscard Guaranty Corporation (SGC)
SGC has made a major comeback with their sleek black tuxedo labels. They grade on the same 1-10 scale and are known for consistent, strict grading standards.
Why choose SGC: Lower grading fees than PSA, faster turnaround times, and strong resale values especially in hockey and vintage baseball. Their 9.5 and 10 grades are highly respected.
Which Grading Company Should You Use?
Choose PSA if you want maximum market recognition and liquidity. PSA 10s sell fastest and for the highest prices in most categories.
Choose BGS if your card has potential for high subgrades or if you collect modern cards where BGS 9.5 and 10 labels carry prestige.
Choose SGC if you want professional grading at a lower cost, especially for vintage cards or hockey collections where SGC\'s reputation is growing rapidly.
Before You Grade
Inspect your cards carefully under good lighting. Look for surface scratches, print dots, soft corners, and edge chipping. Our condition guide shows exactly what to check.
If you are buying graded cards, always verify the certification number on the grading company\'s website. Counterfeit slabs exist, and verification takes seconds.
