Building a card collection takes time and money. Protecting it should be a priority from day one. Here's how to keep your cards in the best possible condition.
The Four Enemies of Cards
1. UV light — Sunlight and fluorescent lighting fade card surfaces over time 2. Humidity — High moisture warps cards, causes mould 3. Heat — Can warp and damage card surfaces 4. Physical contact — Fingerprints, bending, scratching
Protective Supplies
Penny Sleeves
The first line of defence for every card. Always put a new card in a penny sleeve immediately. They cost almost nothing — buy them in bulk.
Top Loaders
Rigid plastic holders that protect cards from bending. Use these for any card worth more than a dollar or two. Available in standard and thick (for jersey/relic cards).
Card Savers
Flexible plastic holders preferred by grading companies. Better for mailing cards and submitting to PSA/BGS.
Magnetic Cases (One-Touch)
Premium holders that snap shut magnetically. Perfect for displaying valuable cards. Avoid for cards you might submit for grading — the magnet can sometimes affect card values.
Card Binders
For building a display collection. Use binder pages designed specifically for trading cards (not standard photo pages).
Long-Term Storage Boxes
For large collections, use card storage boxes. Keep them in a climate-controlled environment, away from basements and attics.
Environmental Controls
- Temperature: Store cards at room temperature (65-75°F)
- Humidity: Keep relative humidity between 40-60%. A simple hygrometer costs under $20.
- Light: Store in opaque boxes or away from direct light
- Away from pests: Cards stored in cardboard boxes in garages or basements are vulnerable to insects and rodents
Handling Cards
- Always hold cards by the edges
- Never touch the surface
- Wash hands before handling valuable cards
- Don't stack unsleeved cards
- Never use rubber bands around cards
